Chiropractic corrects spinal bone misalignments called vertebral subluxations that interfere with nerve function. The nerve system controls all body functions – including immune function – and Chiropractic care has a positive effect on immune function.
There are millions of different types of flu viruses and they are changing (mutating) all the time. The brain and the immune system are the two major adaptive systems in the body and during an immune response the brain and immune system “talk to each other”. This is essential for maintaining balance in the body.
Chiropractic emphasizes that viruses and microbes don’t threaten us equally and a healthy immune system repels most invaders, including influenza. The immune system is controlled and co-ordinated by the nerve system, like every other system in the body. Chiropractic is also aware of positive life style practices (rest, drinking adequate water, diet, exercise and stress reduction approaches) can also positively influence the nerve system and immune response.
Chiropractic helping people with the flu is not new. It was Chiropractic’s success in caring for flu victims during the 1917-1918 influenza epidemic that led to its’ licensure. The Spanish flu epidemic of 1917-1918 killed an estimated 20 million people worldwide. It killed more American soldiers than died in World War 1.
Data was kept in Davenport Iowa during this epidemic. 93, 590 people were treated by medical doctors with 6, 116 deaths – a loss of one patient out of every 15. Chiropractors at the Palmer School of Chiropractic adjusted 1,635 cases with only one death. In Iowa 4, 735 cases were adjusted by Chiropractors with only 6 deaths – 1 out of 866; in Oklahoma 3,490 flu cases under Chiropractic care with only 7 deaths. Chiropractors were also called in 233 cases given up as lost after medical care with 25 deaths.
How do Chiropractic adjustments help? Chiropractic has beneficial effects on immunoglobulins, B-lymphocytes (white blood cells), breathing and other immune processes. One study (Brennan PhD) found when Chiropractic adjustments are applied to the mid-back the response of white blood cells taken from the blood 15 minutes later was higher than blood collected before. This “burst” is needed for our immune cells to destroy invading viruses and bacteria. In another study HIV positive patients over a 6 month period receiving Chiropractic adjustments to the upper neck showed a 48 percent increase in CD4 cell counts versus a 7.96 percent decrease in CD4 cell counts in those who did not receive Chiropractic. Robert Blanko PhD studied 2,818 people who were under Chiropractic care and found an overall improvement between 7-28 percent in symptoms including stiffness in the spine, pain, fatigue, incidence of colds and flu, headaches, menstrual discomfort, gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, dizziness, and falls.
It makes a great deal of sense to do everything you can to get your immune system functioning at its’ best. Everything including Chiropractic care.
